Welcome to another installment of Seriously Geeky Sundays! This week is a double feature, since I couldn’t get my act together in time for last week. I’ve mashed the two themes of captains and fathers together, so I took some creative liberties to make it work. Links of note will be listed under Further Reading.
Who was the captain of your childhood? / Who is your favourite fictional dad?
Like many of my cohort, I totally had a crush on Orlando Bloom as Will Turner the younger (it was hot on the heels of his run as Legolas). Can we take a moment to appreciate his evolution as lovesick blacksmith to kickass, albeit unintended, captain of the Dutchman?
When you think about captains who is the first one to come to mind? / Who is your favourite evil dad?
My mind immediately went to the Emperor Zurg – Buzz Lightyear reveal, essentially Star Wars but with toys.
Do emperors count as captains? Star Command: The Adventure Begins leads me to believe Zurg has/had a ship at some point, seeing as how it takes place in space.
Who is your favourite fictional captain? / Who is your favourite father figure/mentor?
Sean Connery as Marko Ramius. Not a father himself, but there was clearly a mentor – mentee relationship with Jack Ryan towards the end of the movie, at least.
Who is your favourite crew? / Who is your favourite unconventional father/mentor?
Hearken back with me to when I was a more active fan of Game of Thrones. My favorite ragtag bunch was the Night’s Watch.
Remember Samwell Tarly? This guy was the bee’s knees. Total book nerd instead of a fighter, yet casually manages to off a White Walker, and takes on a baby that isn’t his? All the accolades!
What is your favourite ship? / What is your favourite child/father scene?
The RLS Legacy in Treasure Planet a.k.a. Treasure Island…in spaaace.
There’s a surrogate father/son relationship between John Silver and Jim Hawkins. Yes, I know Disney made Silver a typical bad guy turns good (fun fact, that trope is called a heel-face turn), but it still tugs the heartstrings.
The last fandom you experienced has suddenly been cast at sea/into outer space. Who is the captain and who are their crewmates? / What is your favourite quote from a fandom about fathers/by a father?
The soundtrack made me want to watch the movie again, so I’m going with Tron: Legacy. Since it’s based in a digital world it’s already set for space. As for the crew we have:
- Sam Flynn: actual captain, but secretly knows his dad is the one true captain
- Quorra: first mate/electro-technical officer
- Zuse and Gem: stewards
- CLU 2.0: engineer
- Rinzler: gunner
- Jarvis: petty officer
- Kevin Flynn: retired captain, now the innocuous chief chef that bails the ship out of trouble
As for my favorite quote by a father, I’m going with this exchange between Sam and Kevin:
Sam: Ice caps are melting, war in the Middle East, Lakers/Celtics back at it. I don’t know, rich are getting richer, poor are getting poorer. Cell phones, online dating, Wi-fi.
Kevin: What’s Wi-fi?
Sam: Wireless interlinking.
Kevin: Of digital devices?
Sam: Yeah.
Kevin: Huh. I thought of that in ’85.
I didn’t clock the title straight away and started reading before I realised what you were doing. It’s safe to say I was thorughly confused, then really amused and impressed. This was a really clever way to catch up on two topics and I really applaud you for that. Such a fun read!
Don’t forget to pop your link in the link up in the post in my blog so others can see your answers – and they really need to see this one! 😀
