Seriously Geeky Sundays: Draw Me Like One of Your 2D Models ✏

Another beautiful Sunday, another fresh batch of Heather’s awesome Sunday prompts. I’m warming up with Edvard Greig’s “Morning Mood” from Peer Gynt. It’s a popular piece that accompanies sunrise animations in classic cartoons, which is tangentially related to the theme of this week’s questions. Links of note will be listed under Further Reading.

What is your favourite Disney movie?

Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast were my topmost watched Disney movies growing up. I must confess I haven’t bothered to see the Aladdin remake yet. Robin Williams will always be the best genie, period end of story.

I was sorely disappointed by the Beauty and the Beast remake; Ewan McGregor deserved better than that. They also didn’t bring back Angela Lansbury for “Tale as Old as Time,” which was a travesty.

Honestly how could you do her dirty like that.

What is your favourite non-Disney movie?

When I wasn’t watching Disney movies, I was watching Don Bluth’s work. Of all his pieces my favorite is Dragon’s Lair, which is technically a video game but it’s an interactive movie at its core. Allegedly a feature length piece is coming to Netflix this year, so I’m low-key excited for that.

What is your favourite animated show?

Anything that Chuck Jones or Genndy Tartakovsky worked on, I’m a fan of. I’m most familiar with Jones’ work with Warner Bros. cartoons. I was always fascinated with how he did eyebrows. They are incredibly expressive.

I know Tartakovsky’s work through Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, so Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab, Samurai Jack, and Primal. My favorite tidbit I read about him was that he said in his early years he couldn’t draw a perfect circle. Then he went on to pioneer an entire style based on thick lines and sharp corners.

What was your favourite childhood show?

I didn’t have cable growing up, so I was limited to the PBS line of animation shows. My favorite animated show was Arthur

Who is your favourite animated character?

Toothless! I adore the fact his behavior is modeled after a cat. I might have purchased both of Build-A-Bear’s iterations of him. I have no regrets.

What is your favourite piece of music from animation?

“Try Anything” as sung by Shakira and the glittery hot pants tigers from Zootopia. It hasn’t failed to make me want to run faster yet.

  1. Love those choices for Disney movies! I felt very much the same way about Aladdin in regards to the Genie, and I was very happy to find that it was done with great taste and reverence. They also embellished some of the characters (especially the Genie and Jasmine) quite a bit so it feels much more like a new movie rather than a straight adaptation like Beauty and the Beast. That’s just my opinion though, and I completely understand anyone’s choice in not wanting to watch it. I still need to see The Lion King one and as it’s my favourite I’m torn between wonder and terror.
