Seriously Geeky Sundays: The Pre-Hellaween Hype 🎃

I’m only mildly ashamed I made a terrible Life is Strange joke the title. Halloween’s not for another two months; what a weird year this is going to be for trick-or-treaters. Since I’m a week late and these last two prompts are tangentially related, I’m mashing them together into a spooky mega post. Links of note will be listed under Further Reading.

Have you cosplayed before? If yes, which character was your favourite? If no, which character would you like to cosplay as?

I have, but I don’t have the desire to compete. I used to dress up as mythical creatures as a kid. My best monster costume was Medusa; I went the whole nine yards and even put snakes in my hair. Nobody got who I was though, the heathens.

These days, I tend to gravitate towards side characters or characters that are simple to put together. My favorite, easiest, and most relevant cosplay to my career incidentally is Fix-It Felix Jr. from Wreck-It Ralph.

One day I would love to commit to a more ambitious cosplay, the kind that involve Worbla armor. For now, I’m content with characters I can easily pull from my closet and source accessories for if necessary.

What does cosplay mean to you?

Cosplay is like theater on steroids. Admittedly I haven’t quite pinned down the skill of acting in character. The point is, I get to not be myself for a little while.

Do you have a favourite cosplayer?

I am not involved enough in the community to say that I do. I think it’s cool though that individuals are dedicated enough to be able to do it for a living or side hustle though!

What is the most unique cosplay you have ever seen?

Sadly, I didn’t get a picture of it, but at C2E2 there were two attendees dressed in MoCap (motion capture) suits, which was hysterical. It’s not common (to me at least) convention attire.

Have you ever done a casual cosplay (aka everyday cosplay) or Disney bounding?

Not in any deliberate capacity, no. I’m not opposed to casually cosplaying at work. My job often takes me up into a tile ceiling or hauling around equipment that hasn’t been dusted in a minute. I suppose I could say I casually cosplay as Mike Rowe.

Pick a group of characters from a fandom and tell us who they would cosplay as!

I’m going with Bill Amend’s Foxtrot:

Roger – James Bond

Andy – Jane Austen

Paige – Princess Peach

Jason – Star Trek science officer, maybe Data or Spock

Peter – Evil Knievel

Quincy – in his mind Drogon, but his coloring would more accurately match Rhaegal

What was your first introduction to the horror genre?

Does mythology count as a horror genre? Lots of people met some terrible fates in myths, especially in Greek and Egyptian myths, which were my top two genres growing up.

Horror comes in all flavours now; what sub-genres do you like/dislike?

I like psychological and techno-thriller/horror. Gore for the sake of gore never interested me, so you won’t catch me watching the Saw series anytime soon.

For a brief time, I liked to watch horror Let’s Plays. I remember when Amnesia and Slenderman were at their peak popularity. My favorite player at the time was Morfar and his Amnesia playthrough. It’s a real shame he’s passed on.

Who is your favourite monster?

This is not my favorite monster, but personally one of the most unsettling. I went to see Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark because I read the book series, and it was that time of year where I felt like getting spooked on purpose. Anyway, the grossest monster to me was the Pale Lady. The post movie discussion I had was that she’s a Lovecraftian monster, in that she represents the inescapable. We see it coming, and there’s nothing we can do to get away.

What is your favourite monstrous species?

Unicorns and dragons were my bread and butter, and to some extent they still are.

The next runner up would be demonic monsters. The best example I have is the Balrog.

Monsters come in all forms including humans; who is your favourite human monster?

I don’t believe they’re all monsters, but witches/sorceresses. I wouldn’t mind being able to tap into the energy of the Universe to make my will incarnate.

What is your favourite horror/supernatural fandom?

I might have mentioned it already, but Supernatural will always have a small place in my heart. Additionally, in college I had a group of people I’d watch Ghost Hunters with, although it was primarily to poke fun at it.

Currently, I’m looking forward to Dark Black by Sam Weller. According to the blurb, he’s the official biographer of Ray Bradbury, one of my favorite authors. I’m looking forward to this collection of spooky stories.
