Seriously Geeky Sundays (on Tuesday): Beginnings

I fell down a rabbit hole and found this exciting new series created by Heather over at Just Geeking By. It reminded me of the 30 day challenges I used to participate in on Tumblr, and I felt compelled to try something like that again, because honestly, I miss doing those. So many thank yous, Heather! Sorry I’m a bit tardy! Check out the links in Further Reading.

Let’s start with the basics; who are you and what do you do?

My pen name here is Chicken Chaser. I used to be far more open about my offline persona in the golden days of MySpace and early Facebook. As I’ve grown older and more conscious of my digital footprint, I’d rather keep the two personas separate for now.

I am 28, and I work as an assistant director of technology at a school. Basically, I’m chief cook and bottle-washer. If it plugs in and faces the Internet, it’s in my jurisdiction. It’s been an adjustment working remotely due to the current climate, but I am very grateful to still have a job.

When did you start blogging?

I’ve had XP Fetch Quest sitting in development for a few months now. This prompt finally convinced me to take it live. Since my offline activities are not an option currently, I’m looking to the Internet to get engaged in a new community.

This place may be new-ish, but I have history on Blogger and Tumblr, mostly in the late 00s/early aughts. I got exposed to WordPress in a volunteer gig and decided if I ever got mildly serious about blogging again, WordPress would be the way for me to go.

Do you personally identify as a geek or nerd, or both?

Both.

I identify as a geek in that I enjoy a broad variety of genres in media, books, music, and games. I like and appreciate many characters and stories, but that’s about as deep as I’ll venture.

I identify as a nerd in that there are certain topics that really stoke my boilers. I’ll consume additional content beyond what’s canonically provided. The list of things I’d do that for used to be longer when I was younger. I lost that fire growing up. I hope to reconnect with that part of me here.

When did you first realize you were a geek/nerd?

Grade school. I remember reading every spare minute I had. Those challenges where you had to read x many minutes for a prize? Absolutely wasted ’em, ha!

What was your first geeky interest?

The first fandom I remember being unwittingly thrust into has to be The Lord of the Rings. My dad read them to me before bed, among other stories. I remember seeing The Fellowship of the Ring in theaters at the tender age of 9 and not understanding why they cut it off early. There was more to the story! That was the first foray I can remember into the concept of movie trilogies.

What was the first movie you watched this year?

GUNS AKIMBO! I saw a promotional picture for it last year and clicked through. I had to know why Harry Potter was sporting guns bolted to his hands. It was clearly a passion project, from the ludicrous story line to the banging soundtrack, and I adored it. Absolutely worth the price of entry, I’m sad it had such a limited run.

AHH this was fun! I look forward to participating again! If you’re interested in playing too I highly recommend checking out the series’ intro post!

  1. No apologies needed for being a tad late 🙂 It’s wonderful to have you join in and lovely to meet you! I had not heard of Guns Akimbo before so I’ll need to keep my eye out for that one.

It’s nice to e-meet you too! 🤩 It’s a very ridiculous movie, I had a fun time despite the shallow story line.
I’m looking forward to your future prompts!
