Seriously Geeky Sundays: “I got a smile up on my face.” 🎼

Welcome back to another installment of SGS! This week’s theme focuses on things that make me smile, which is sorely needed after this last week. Links of note will be listed under Further Reading.

What TV shows do you love?

I haven’t kept up with live TV programming in a hot minute. I do have a Netflix subscription, but even during lockdown I haven’t taken serious advantage of it. When I do feel like watching something, I tend to go for documentaries (anything narrated by Sir David Attenborough πŸ’š, space, history, true crime) or animation (anime, Genndy Tartakovsky, Chuck Jones).

What are your favourite movie genres?

I would say my top two genres are fantasy (LOTR) and animation (Studio Ghibli, Pixar, DreamWorks).

What do you like to read?

I’m open to most genres. I would say I gravitate most towards fiction (fantasy/sci-fi, thriller/horror, speculative, some YA), medical history, and general science (Sam Kean, Mary Roach, Deborah Blum). Lately I’ve been on a bit of a bender with personal development books, though I can only read a chapter or two at a time because I have a lot of work to do on myself and I’m already exhausted.

What about games?

In regards to board games, I prefer short(ish) card-based games (Boss Monster, Legends of Draxia, Cypher). In regards to video games, I’ve been sitting on a hoard mostly comprised of RPGs and linear style games. That reminds me, I must run my programs for June’s backlog choices.

What geeky thing made you smile this week?

This is dumb, but I started cherry-picking episodes from Jocko Podcast that had interesting titles. His rapport with Echo is absolutely goofy and I love it. Seriously though, they have some hot takes on leadership and ownership that are interesting.

What quote always makes you smile?

Throwback time to my weird watch history on the Internet! I don’t quite remember how I found this but there was a YouTuber I watched in 2010 that played the Syoban Action series, which is a purposefully difficult Mario clone. He was such a joy to watch because his stream of consciousness was something else. My favorite video of all time was in his playthrough of Syoban Action 2. I quote this at least once a quarter. Even transcribing this made me giggle, so here it is in all its glory. Pardon the capitalization, I took a few creative liberties while trying to illustrate what words were emphasized:

“Oh my god, will I do it? Will this be the time, the time that is spoke of in ancient legends? … Will this cat be the one? The one to rule them all?! NOOO he fucking died. THE KINGDOM has been lost. ALLL THE MEEEN ARE DEAD. You have failed in your epic quest as the Fucking Cat of Lore!”

  1. I actually found your geeky smile of the week really cute! Nothing is dumb if it makes you smile πŸ™‚ Hell, I randomly smile over the cat just sleeping in a cute position which he’s done a thousand times before, but suddenly he’ll catch my eye and I’ll be like ‘d’awwww!’. Goofy, silly, dumb things making us smile is what the world is all about πŸ™‚
