Seriously Geeky Sundays: “A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.” ⌨

Greetings, proud warriors! Heather’s theme this week focuses on weapons and warfare. Links of note will be listed under Further Reading.

What is the most pivotal fictional battle you can think of?

Lately I’ve been gravitating towards human vs. AI/tech arcs. I ripped through The God Game in a night earlier this year, I can’t recommend it highly enough. How do you go toe to toe with an entity that already knows every possible move you can make? And one that can manipulate variables in your real life?

Who is your favourite warrior?

Rory Thorne. Yes, she’s a bit OP (it’s YA after all), but I remember how I found K. Eason’s spin on the fairy blessings of Sleeping Beauty fascinating. Her gift to see through lies gives her an interesting advantage that I can’t wait to see play out in The Thorne Chronicles

Is there a fictional warrior class do you admire?

Beast tamers or tanks. I would be so down to have a mighty battle cat or a dragon or war unicorn. Something big for sure. When I played Overwatch I always went for Reinhardt because he has kickass armor, a huge hammer, and is a big soaker of damage. I’m sure some psychologist out there would love to pick apart my admiration for brute strength.

What is your favourite quote about battles?

“In warfare, subterfuge is your foundation, advantage your motivation, and circumstance determines your formation. You must be swift as the wind, dense as the forest, rapacious as fire, steadfast like a mountain, mysterious as night and mighty as thunder. Organize your men in the plundering of the enemy’s country, allocate captured land amongst them to their best advantage, and do not act without careful consideration. Victory belongs to him who has mastered the combination of the devious and the direct. Such is the art of maneuvering against the enemy.”

– Sun Tzu

If you could join a fictional fighting organisation what would it be?

It’ll be something guerilla, like the book burners at the end of Fahrenheit 451.

You’re able to learn one battle ability or spell for a day; what would it be?

Elemental manipulation. My gut says earth, as I liked Earth benders best in Avatar: The Last Airbender
